You remain traditional by separating content from style, thereby focusing content-specialists (like editors and authors) back on the content and less on the stylistic aspects offered by desktop publishing (which said authors complained about relentlessly). Then, I'd try to find the different content segments they had and find how much could be automated. Online and low-design stuff can be highly automated. High-design content needs the more fineesed touch of IndDesign. But you could still get leverage in automation by processing content as much as possible automatically before it went in to be hand-tailored. That's where I have seen wins from the angst of e vs p.Michael Friedmanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03143826636324353236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2128881563203016813.post-83549083576848941492009-08-07T14:58:11.218-07:002009-08-07T14:58:11.218-07:00Tim - A good and compelling analysis (as usual). There will be more and more web sites selling ebooks direct to consumers; somebody has to supply that. The biggest retailers like Amazon and B&N can set up their own relationships with publishers, but as is pointed out already here, independent operations already rely on Ingram or Content Reserve to aggregate for them. Because the publishers aren't vertical and the points of consumer contact will be, I think the role of the wholesaler in the ebook supply chain is going to be growing for quite some time.Mike Shatzkinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06379396250041253335noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2128881563203016813.post-26817358285162066382009-06-01T15:15:32.780-07:002009-06-01T15:15:32.780-07:00Ingram as Lightning Source (the two together aka I...Ingram as Lightning Source (the two together aka Ingram Lightning Group) does play a "wholesale" type of role in the ebook industry. Some publishers contract directly with some online bookstores. For places like Amazon and Sony, that's the only option. But stores like Fictionwise, BooksonBoard, and Diesel can and do get their product from LSI as the distributor, in addition to the direct publisher contract.

So the role is still there, though perhaps not as extensive as it has been historically. But still, I can't think that their role in digital will ever disappear completely because, as a publisher, I can't imagine dealing directly with every online retailer. The logistics of tracking all those accounts...

And in other news, Fran says you need to get signed up for Twitter.
